Urban Futures Otherwise

feminist & Southern Perspectives

08 OCTOBER 2025 09:30 TILL 10 OCTOBER 2025 15:30

Masterclass with Prof. Faranak Miraftab

We are honoured to host Professor Faranak Miraftab (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) for a three-day masterclass during EDI Week 2025. Professor Miraftab is an internationally recognised scholar in feminist planning, transnational urbanism, and the urban consequences of displacement. Her work has been shaping debates on decolonial pedagogy, intersectionality, and knowledge production from the Global South.

The masterclass (8–10 October 2025) offers a unique opportunity for Master’s students and PhD researchers to engage in a studio-based, interdisciplinary exploration of urban transformation through the lenses of migration, resistance, and feminist critique. Over the course of three days, participants will work with Professor Miraftab and colleagues from the faculty in small groups, interrogating dominant planning paradigms and experimenting with alternative methodologies that foreground voices and practices from the margins.

The masterclass will culminate on Friday, 10 October, in a public presentation and discussion where participants share their insights, proposals, and reflections. This final session not only highlights the outcomes of the collaborative work but also serves as a platform for dialogue on how inclusive and feminist approaches can reshape both urban scholarship and practice.

This masterclass is organised by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’s Diversity Office.
